M2M response to young man killed in Gurney drive

Halo friends ! Welcome to this 1st post for Men2men blog !

To start the ball rolling I'm attaching a letter I sent to Rohana this afternoon :

Halo Rohana !

From the perspective of M2M I think a few points here can be highlighted in our press release:

While we don’t know the entire situation we can assume this much had happened from press reports (appended): a few youth tried to stop another group of youth from teasing 2 girls from the first group. As a result the other group attacked the first group –resulting in 1 youth being killed. From here a number of disturbing points :

· Whether the attempt to stop the teasing of the girl arose of being over-protective attitude of the first group of youth or not the resort to violence to settle the issue is to be regretted and condemned. However this is an increasing trend –and the above violence is not the first nor the last. M2M warned against such trend in which violence is used as a common resort to settle issues arising from interaction between males and females. The stereotype macho image of men almost regularly condone males’ violence as a way to assert manliness. This values behind men’s violence must be challenged before a new non-violent male self-image can come about.
· Youth violence is also an increasing trend –reflecting conditioning from media and culture that violence is to be accepted as part of reality. This is worrying because it helps to reproduce pattern of violence found in adult society, despite anti-sexism and anti-violence campaign over the last generations.
· The culture of violence among males easily extend to victimization of women as reflected by prevalence of violence against women as reported by media.

In order to probe further into the nature of violence in the interactions between males and females-especially how it relates to the males’ self-image of sexuality M2M will be holding the 1st M2M forum:
